Experienced Divorce Mediation Lawyer Serving Bartlett, Streamwood and Surrounding Towns

Mediation is a type of alternative dispute resolution (ADR) that can be used for a wide variety of legal matters. It is particularly useful in divorce cases because it helps avoid a contentious and expensive legal fight. When divorce related issues are discussed with a skilled mediator, an agreement that is mutually acceptable to both parties is more likely. At Canning Law Offices, we are experienced in handling family law mediation cases.

Attorney Charles Canning is a trained mediator and has been approved for court appointed mediation in Kane County. With over 30 years of experience handling family law matters, he is highly knowledgeable and skilled at helping parties resolve even the most difficult divorce-related issues.

How Mediation Works

When two parties opt to resolve a dispute through mediation, they meet with a neutral third party—the mediator—who helps them reach an agreement. Mediators are trained in conflict resolution and are skilled in helping find a consensus on challenging issues. Some mediators are attorneys, but cannot give legal advice while serving in the role of mediator. Hiring a mediator who is an attorney is beneficial, however, as they will have the valuable experience of litigating divorce cases and are familiar with the court process.

Sometimes mediation fails. If the mediation does not result in an agreement, the case can go on to be litigated in court. The mediation proceedings are confidential and cannot be used against either party in court.

Benefits of Divorce Mediation

Divorce mediation offers several benefits over the conventional divorce process. First, resolutions can be reached quicker and at less expense than if a divorce goes to court. Additionally, mediated divorce agreements are determined by the couple with their specific needs in mind. Consequently, both parties are more likely to fulfill the terms of their divorce. Avoiding a protracted legal battle is beneficial to the future relationship of the couple, which is particularly important if there are children involved.
